MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. About the Ukraine programme:
Since the Russian invasion of 24th February 2022, Ukraine has been subjected to heavy artillery bombardment, missile, and air strikes, as well as the use of landmines and cluster munitions. The scale of the conflict and the use of high impact and indiscriminate weapons requires an urgent and extensive response. MAG responded to the crisis in 2022 and now employs nearly 440 staff in our Ukraine programme, in a range of operational and support/administrative activities, with further scale-up planned during 2026. The programme has a representation office in Kyiv, and operational offices in Mykolaiv (also covering accessible areas of Kherson) and Kharkiv.
About the role:
The National Police of Ukraine have requested assistance in managing Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and explosive ordnance. These items are increasingly being recovered from Ukrainian military personnel returning from the front line and are being seized at National Police checkpoints. This request represents the first opportunity for MAG, or any other agency, to operate in the SALW management domain in Ukraine, a country that has experienced a substantial influx of weapons since the onset of the full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Reporting to the Technical Operations Manager, the Technical Lead will be responsible for overseeing and implementing MAG Ukraine’s Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM) activities, including Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) management and related tasks in accordance with MAG’s organisational standards and international best practice as identified in the IATGs and MOSAIC as a baseline.
This role combines technical expertise with project management and capacity building to enhance national capabilities in WAM. The Technical Lead will conduct assessments, supervise field operations, provide training, and ensure compliance with international standards. They will also lead liaison efforts with national authorities and Security and Defence Forces, while coordinating with MAG's Programme Quality Team to align in-country activities with organizational standards. This position plays a crucial role in improving safety, security, and operational effectiveness in WAM across MAG's global operations.
Requirements
The successful candidate will bring substantial technical expertise across WAM type activities, supported by strong experience in field operations and bulk demolitions. You will be confident in developing, reviewing and complying to security and technical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and in contributing to technical planning and clearance targets.
You will have a proven background in SALW/PSSM operations within developing country contexts and be able to lead, motivate and manage diverse teams effectively. Strong mentoring and coaching skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently for extended periods in stand‑alone environments with limited supervision.
